April 15, 2005 Disney to Exploit Miramax Vault
Now that The Walt Disney Company has wrested complete control of Miramax from the Weinstein brothers, it has announced a plan to make more effective use of the Miramax film library. Said a studio spokesperson, "The Weinstein's were nice guys, but they were really not aggressive in the marketing of the material under their control. We aim to remedy that situation."
With this goal in mind, Disney has announced the creation of a new "Mirrormax" film division, devoted to making sequels to popular Miramax films. "We will only make sequels that it makes sense to make," says the studio. "We don't want to embarrass ourselves."
When asked what would be done if the original writers, directors, or actors were not available or not willing to participate in sequels, the studio replied, "Moviegoers aren't tied to a particular cast member. Pulp Fiction would still be Pulp Fiction without Quin Torontonio, or whatever his name is. Nobody went to Shakespeare in Love because of the writer. What people want is a concept. We'll give them another look at a concept they love, along with extensive revisits to moments in the original film that were popular, maybe spiced up with some jokes about people running into things and stuff. People eat that up."
Films currently in the Mirrormax pipeline include:
- Apocalypse Now Redux Part II
- Catching Amy
- Chicago II: Catch the Wind
- The Cook, the Thief, His Wife, Her Lover, and That Darned Cat
